Week 50: Goodbye Asia!

September 4, 2009 - Filed under Weekly Report

Wow, our last week in Asia! I can’t believe it’s been a year already, (ok, so we’re short by two weeks, but close enough). We’ve been busy making plans for our next couple of moves, and generally just getting organized. We’ll spend just over a month back in Canada visiting friends & family, and making a few work connections before we head off to Costa Rica to continue this crazy lifestyle of ours.

In preparation for our return to North America, we spent this week shopping. We’ve been wearing pretty much the same clothes for the last year and they’ve definitely seen better days, so it was time to stock up on some new threads. We needed not only replacements of all the board-shorts/beach-clothes we’ve been wearing, but also a few client friendly outfits, as we both have a couple of meetings while we’re back in Vancouver.

The shopping however proved harder than we anticipated. We spent four days in Kuala Lumpur, and hit most of the malls we could find. Unfortunately we just weren’t having much luck. Everything was either too small or just plain ugly, seriously what’s with the 80’s come-back, and neon overload. After three days, and not much no success I was pretty discouraged and sick of the mall, so we spent our last day in KL just chillin’ at the hotel pool.

In order to break up our return flight we headed to Hong Kong two days early. I also hoped to get in some more shopping before we flew home, but after the disastrous attempt in KL I just couldn’t be bothered. Instead we ate Dim Sum, drank beer, and watched the light show over the harbour in downtown Hong Kong.

The flight back to Vancouver was relatively painless, as far as 13 hour flights go. And surprisingly after almost an entire year away, neither of us were searched at customs!
