Week 10: Finding a new place to live in Dauin

November 11, 2008 - Filed under Scuba Diving, Weekly Report

Another week gone by. Week 10! I can hardly believe how fast time is flying. This week was mostly spent working and looking for a new place to live.  Both of us had a few work projects on the go, and finding a new home has been top of the list for a couple weeks now. I’ve actually been a bit surprised at how hard it’s been to find something decent. I realize we have a lot of things on our list of wants/needs, but for some reason I thought it would be a little easier.

Much like we did when we first arrived in Dumaguete, we checked out a couple of cafes where they have a few listings posted. One place in particular, the “Why Not Bar”, seemed promising at first, but we quickly realized most of their listings were for show, and not much was actually available. We did a few more searches online, and even resorted to the old fashioned walk/drive around looking for ‘for rent’ signs.   Just as we were beginning to give up and start looking at other options, (such as heading to Thailand earlier than we thought) we found something. It turns out, as with most things in life, it’s all about who you know.

A couple of guys we’d chatted to a few times at the pool bar had been living in a two bedroom house just down the beach from the resort. They’d only been there a couple weeks, when they realized they were too old and set in their ways to be living together, and wanted their own space so they were moving out.  They mentioned to the owner we might be interested and we went by to have a look.

The place is great, it’s a little bigger than we need, and a bit more expensive than we were hoping for, but after seeing what else there is on offer, it’s by far the best option.  We agreed to take it on a month-by-month basis and headed into town to sort out an internet connection. We went to the Smart Wireless office, and proceeded to fill out some forms only to be told to come back on monday since the woman who opens new accounts wasn’t in that day.

On Thursday, after feeling a bit of relief in finding a place to live we decided to go diving.  The dive shop was running a half day trip to Siquijor, with 2 dives and a BBQ, and since some of our favorite diving has been in Siquijor, we decided to go along. It was a bit rainy and gross that day, but underwater was beautiful. The visibility was great, and you’d never even know if was raining on the surface.

On the way back the rain had let up and we saw a couple of dophins.
